Nurse attacked during vaccination drive in Mallapuram, 3 held

Three men have been arrested in connection with the attack on a public health nurse in Malappuram. She was allegedly attacked during a measles and rubella vaccination drive in the disrict.

The nurse, Shyamala B's, hand was twisted and her colleagues were attacked by the gang at the venue, GLP school in Edavoor.

Attackers were all residents of the same area.

Kerala Health Minister, KK Shailaja, has condemned the incident.

"Strict action will be taken in such cases. But these should be seen in isolation with no support from from public at large", she said.

The vaccination drive is being held across Kerala upto the age of 15 years against Measles and Rubella.

Some groups in Malappuram, traditionally, have been resistant to vaccinations in general.
But according to medical officers, the resistance has dramatically reduced in last few years, with schools and institutions voluntarily opening their doors to the current vaccination drive.
